ecoMachines are new architectural prototypes promoting systemic interaction between Londoners and their urban environment. Developed by AAINTER10 students, ecoMachines expose and direct exchange and promoting long term integration. The exhibition/experiment feature three ecoMachines operating live in front of the London GLA for one month. Visitors will be free to interact and be part of the event: the resulting evolutionary processes will be recorded and, at the end of the month, relayed on time lapse video. The prototypes from the collection LFA08.03 belongs to the FAUNA // ENERGY // WATER series as they test specific interaction within these three ecological domains.
Open Aviary is a new approach to the aviary typology. Instead of a large enclosure that holds the birds in a confined space, this installation forms a more open system. Abandoning the concept of enclosure and instead utilizing the idea of attraction. Setting up a micro habitat for wild life that can exist within an urban context. An aviary without protection net. Nesting and feeding patterns of most endangered London bird are managed by the bundling structure strcture made of renewable willow filaments. Densities are manipulated to provide bird's habitat while encouraging people accessibility for a self contained bird watching experience.
Tidal Garden aims to establish a two-way engagement between the Thames River and the pedestrian along the Embankement. The plants will serve as an indicator of the pollution level of the Thames, suggesting pedestrins the polluted water will cause plants to wilt. Raising awareness on the cleanness of the river, hopefully one day the whole Thames will serve as a habitat for more wild life fishes again. The concept is to provide a passive vegetation system on the Embankment for the London Festival of Architecture. Utilizing the tidal process to store water for the irrigation of vegetations growing on the surface of the bulk, water will be transported using the high tides and low tides phenomenon and capillary pull action. Valves are used to trap water during low tides season. A bench is provided to create a physical barrier for the walking pedestrian. The bulk structure will be secured at its both ends as well as its middle to position the whole installation in place. light reflection and solar shading when you need it.
Breathing Parachute is an inflatable structure made of a nylon cushion which changes its structure and shading capabilities according to the amount of the air within the cushion. Responding to various environmental conditions, visitors are able to vary the amount of air pumped into the cushions by controlling the size of air holes through the zip, thereby creating a sheltering condition that emerges as a direct dialogue between the surrounding environment, the user and the architectural machine.
