FUNcloud pavilion promotes the generation of space as a dynamic relational process unfolding in time. The regular flow of visitors to the Lightbox is confronted and Erased by the introduction of disturbance, or resistance, in the form of an interactive cloud. This condition promotes the Origination of an new potential field of interaction which in turn transforms the original flow. The transformation is both spatial, with migration from the direct trajectory connecting the entrances, and qualitative, with a programmatic mutation from a merely transitional condition to a fully interactive one. As space gets more articulated so does the pattern of interaction -from playground, to party, to exhibition, to lecture, to playground again, in a continuous range of intensities, frequencies, durations and climates. It is an entirely computational architectural machine, where intuitions, material definitions, programmaticrequirements, local processes of interaction, fabrication technologies and chance are registered, processed and fed back at various levels in a continuous chain of loop –loops. The pavilion operates on an octagonal 3D grid of 66cm of unit dimension. Local flows and interaction potential are measured in each node of the grid and are than “confrontedor resisted” by material components, that loop after loop, condense and differentiate over the grid; the process gives rise to a catalogue of cellular components varying in porosity, structural resistance, wetness, luminosityand reflectivity.A para-metric CAD system allows each component to be coded, charted, geometrically re-described and prepared for direct fabrication with FACIT’s CAD-CAM facilities; thecomponents relative confguration can adapt to contextual changes and/or future new urban or architectural scenarios. The structural cloud supports two other systems and liberates a series of emergent new processes; rain water is collected by super-absorbent fibers containing polymers and seeds; more intense rain will result in an increased volume, i.e. more collection capacity , and in a faster organic growth; artificial lighting is provided by another set of fibers, ultra side beam fiber optics, generating a third cloud, dimmed in real time by a computer controlled system.
